hi there everyone
I haven't been in the mood for blogging these days, as I discovered two days ago, when checking my blog stats, that some of the traffic was coming from an adult site. :( Why oh why on earth, I still wonder. One thing I know, is that it's annoying me, to stay polite, and to say the least.
on Blogger blogs, there is no way for blocking IP addresses, so I'm considering switching to Typepad. But I'm still really wondering. I have set up a free micro blog on Typepad, but I really won't be able to do as much as I did on Blogger. I won't be able to use (at least for a free blog) all the beautiful graphics Jill made for me. Unless I switch for a paying blog, and I am really really hesitating.
one more time, before I decide to stay on Blogger, or to switch to Typepad, I will ask for your own experience & opinion. They have helped me more than once, and I am always so grateful to have your sincere thoughts. So my questions are :

- do you have a Typepad blog ?
- is it a free or paying plan ?
- are you satisfied with it ?
- do you find it is worth the price you pay ? (if you're on a paying plan)
- would you recommend it to me ?
- did you have to block IP addresses once ? or nasty comments ?
- is it possible to do on Typepad the same things as on Blogger ? (thinking about using graphics like the ones Jill made for me)
I know it's a lot of questions. I also know that most of you, friends & readers are on Blogspot, just like I am myself. I didn't plan to pay for blogging. Flickr is not free already. If blogging has also to be paid, I would like to know if it is at least worth paying. Or if I shall ignore the fact that some of my traffic these days comes from an adult site. (from me to you, I still can't believe it myself, I am disgusted, shocked & puzzled)
a friend adviced me to report this to the administrator, but in fact you can't report the fact that a bad site links to your blog. You can report when someone steals your content, but not in my case.
I can understand your dilemma. That wasn't a nice discovery.
ReplyDeleteI've got a wordpress account, that one day I intend to use fully. I've had it for a few years, but haven't done much about it because as you say with typepad, you can't do as much with is as you can with blogger. So I'm curious as to your findings with with TP.
Maybe you could password for a few weeks, and see if that stops the flow of traffic?

i hear you dear friend.
ReplyDeleteI think blogspot is more flexible in design unless you are very talented code writer ( not me) but I have been happy with typepad overall and I also really appreciate the talented, more computer literate friends I have that have helped me along the way. I still wonder if it that link might be a virus of some sort.
Hmmmm, no idea! I do know that when I first started blogging I actually chose Typepad because I felt the paid accounts had better scope for design than the others except Wordpress + html knowledge. Also the blogs I admired most at the time all used Typepad. I have a pro account with Typepad and have been happy overall and appreciate their tech support too. I do get robots leaving occasional spam comments but I can block their IP addresses.
ReplyDeleteSince I started Blogger seems to have caught up in the design arena and is also easy to use. But I do know of more than one Blogger blog that has been completely lost, imagine that happening! For that reason I recommend Typepad to friends who want to start a blog.
Have you tried contacting Blogger to enquire about the adult traffic? If you get nowhere there you could try asking Typepad about it and let them know you're considering switching.
You may find in the end that switching is too much trouble overall and that a link from adult sites is less of a problem. Besides you could be giving those adult site followers a newfound interest in the craft world, he-he!
Good luck, Jx
As I mentioned sonia, me and other people have been having exactly the same problem which leads me to think that it is some sort of virus or hacking. I think the problem might sort itself out if you wait a little while before making any decisions. Although, I do certainly agree with Joanie about concerns of blogs just disapearing.
ReplyDeleteWhile I can certainly understand that having visitors from an adult site would be disturbing and alarming,I do hope that you don't stop blogging or vanish without warning.
ReplyDeleteI have been a silent reader for a long time, and I look forward to your posts as one of the few bright spots in my day. I have been going through some very hard times, and my crafting and the crafty blogs I read have been the only therapy I can afford. Of all the ones I read, yours, with your cheerfulness and bright, friendly spirit, has a welcoming and comforting air that makes me feel better, no matter what bad things have happened.
So don't be discouraged by this bit of nastiness. Your loyal readers follow you because you are wonderful, kind, clever and witty, and we will always be here for you!
At first I did not really understand what you meant by adult link. Anyway I suppose you got some nasty comments from somewhere! Please don't be discouraged. I wouldn't decide to pay for blogging as I guess in the financial crisis everyone is trying to find free ways to achieve creativity and a world of creativity where we all start paying discourages me.AriadnefromGreece!
ReplyDeletehi Sonia,
ReplyDeletei am on typepad and have had quite a lot of weird spam like comments. they are usually on older posts. i have one post in particular that seems to get them. the first one i ever got i foolishly clicked on the link and was taken to a dodgy site. sometimes the comments appear normal but i kinda know when they are a little weird now so i delete and block straight away. i also use blogger which is very versatile. i joined typepad as i liked the open contemporary feel of the designs but loads of blogger blogs look fantastic now and i have wondered whether to change back and save some pennies. i am sure that there is so much more i can do with typepad if i was a little more computer savvy. i find adding images with links into the side bar so difficult. As you will see on my blog i have done it before but i can never remember how. hope this helps and sorry you have had some unsavoury links. hope you find a solution to your problem.
love ginny xx
I have also made this sad discovery....maybe if all the bloggers on "blogger" complain about this, en masse, they will stop it from happening or they will have a mass exit on their hands!!!
ReplyDeleteI used blogger for a long time and last year switched to typepad. I have a paid account and really like it. The only thing I miss about blogger is that it is a little quicker to upload photographs to a post on blogger.
ReplyDeleteIf you do switch to typepad, definitely try the beta version, it has better features and although they say it may crash on occasion, I have never had this happen.
For me, the thought of paying money was a bit silly/scary but really my blog is such an important part of my daily life, the $15 a month is really not that much.
I hope this helps you in making your decision.
