still on the same roll

this weekend passed by quickly & slowly at the same time. Hubby & I (hubby being both an organized & messy guy) kept on sorting things (like all the important papers, bills, salary ... that had piled up in 2010), moved things & books from one room to another, from one shelf to another (and an opportunity for cleaning them between each move), finding more things to give away, and making us more aware of what we have & had forgotten about. (books, DVDs & stuffs, mostly)

I've always thought I was the organized kind of girl, but after seeing all the mess we've managed to create these last ten years (and even after SEVEN moves), it is extremely obvvious that I've never been !!!!! Oh well, at least I'm trying to catch up with all that organization part now.

yesterday I reorganized all my laces, crochet laces & trims in general. Made two big glass jars, one for the dark colors, and the pale/pastel/muted ones. And one last for all the other trims. Oh my. I can open a notion store any day !! LOL I also re-organized organized the four drawers next to me at the computer corner. I gave it a little thought & found a fancy name for what I'd been doing until now, with these four drawers : stuff with stuff, that's what I'd been doing. No organization, at all. That's over now, all neat & sorted. I can finally find things again, yay !

this weekend I also worked on three parcels I've sent this morning. Making things take time, but preparing parcels too.And I love both parts of the process !

with love

I also received one, from a dear friend, but which took approximately a whole month for crossing the channel between the UK & France. Thank goodness nothing was an emergency in the parcel !!!

Today I was out most of the day, post office (to ship the said parcels & buy stamps & a box for a heavier parcel), then went to a MobileMe workshop at our local Apple Store, and finished by a trip to Ikea, to get things that I needed for perfecting my organization "plan". (I don't have any, I just try to do my best in every corner of the apartment) Came back home for barely more than an hour & then went to grab the boys as hubby had left to work then.

a friend asked me not to put too much pressure on myself concerning all the tidying/re-organization/cleaning that have been going on here. It's very sweet of her, but really, I'm feeling so happy about it all, I'm VERY satisfied that I got the motivation to do it all ! It just happened like that, and I have no deadline. I'm doing things at my pace, but as I'm a bit of an impatient girl, I love things to happen, and to happen fast ! LOL so I'm trying to get everything in a final (who am I kidding here) & organized kind of way. But, frankly, it's looking good so far. I know this roll will have an end (and I suspect it will happen when I'll reach THE moment of the month, if you see what I mean) so I'm taking advantage of each & every moment I'm motivated to do it. (I am SO sure that you understand what I mean) I hope I'll be able to contemplate & enjoy the results of my/our efforts for the rest of the year, and why not, beyond. Because, I think that once you have found the most effective organization system (I'm not Martha Stewart, but we all have our systems), even if the daily mess piles up, it's fast to tidy. And the less time to spend tidying, the more you can spend it doing something else, or with someone else.

in 2010, I've managed to convince myself (because it was not always the case, before) that I shouldn't let the dishes pile too much (and I'm saying this EVEN THOUGH we do have a dishwasher !!!), and by the end of the year (2010), I made a point of never going to bed with a sink full of dirty dishes. The more instantly you take care of the mess, the less often you will see it, and you'll always feel satisfied (both of having done it already & of not seeing the mess anymore) This said, this is a NEVER ENDING job, but anyway, who are we kidding ... laundry, dishes, cooking, shopping for food, tidying, dusting ... it's the work of a lifetime. We can't do anything at all if none of them are done (and in time). And of course, it's even better if these tasks are a little shared with someone else ... yes guys, I'm talking about you, even if you're SO NOT reading this !! ahah !

but I'm not perfect. There are mornings that greet me with dirty dishes in the sink. These mornings are exceptions now, not the daily scheme. I'm not a domestic goddess, far from it, but I'm not the lazy homemaker anymore neither.

oh, just a little reminder before I go, and if you missed my post last Friday : my Etsy shop turned 3 last Saturday, and in order to celebrate, I'm offering 20% off any order, until January 15th (Saturday), using the coupon code ITSBEEN3YEARS , at checkout !

now off I go help the little ones with the homeworks ! Thanks for stopping by !

  1. the one thing that I always do, is make sure the sink is empty and wiped down before bed. It's the one thing that just keeps me sane. The husband finds it hilarious that I claim that if the sink is splodgy and full , of dishes, that I can't relax, but it's true. It's such a gloomy sight to walk into the kitchen and see a messy sink. If it looks tidy, then the whole room looks tidy. I picked this up from Flylady years ago, and still do it.

I love reorganising and tidying. As long as I'm in the mood! I'm waging war on clutter this year too, but I'm not doing as well as you. Just slowly plodding through it at the moment. Sounds like you are doing a fabulous job!

wow, a month for a parcel. That's a very long time. I remember when I sent a parcel to Canada, it took about 6 weeks, it was ridiculous. Hope other parcels make it to you a lot quicker.

time I was off. Have a lovely evening xx

  2. People living in flats like we do always have problems with clutter. I love organising and reorganising from time to time so that I do my hobbies in an organised environment, but it is always difficult.

Oh how I hope one of those parcels was mine!

  5. I'm so happy you're finding nice things for organizing and new ways to organize too. I need to put more thought into the same thing. I feel better and clearer when there's less stuff everywhere.

Silly Royal Mail. Maybe I should be happy it arrived at all, I fear the one to Canada may take another month! Grrrrrrr.

I wish Ikea was closer to me, they do have such great stuff for big and little storage. I've been thinking about MobileMe, you must let me know if you like it.

  8. Hi, I found your blog through flickr and now I wish I visited earlier!
The thing that bothers me most about living in an apartment is constantly having to hang the wet washing to dry inside. It takes up so much space!
Getting dishes done in the evening is going onto my 2011 resolutions list. Thanks
