a samara is a type of fruit in which a flattened wing of fibrous, papery tissue develops from the ovary wall. A samara is a simple dry fruit and indehiscent (not opening along a seam). They are winged achenes. The shape of a samara enables the wind to carry the seed farther away from the parent tree.so, "samara" is the word I learnt this morning, while looking for the right name for these winged seeds from Montpellier maple / Acer monspessulanum / érable de Montpellier.
what you see along with the samaras are planorbis, fossils that we found yesterday morning, during our day trip to Viviourès castle (well, it ruins) These fossils are more recent than the others I've shown you here. These are approx 60 millions years old. And you can see that they don't look the same as the ones we usually find at another place.
we had a gorgeous day yesterday, it was sunny & windy, and we did find (as you can see) a handful of fossils. I took a hundred photos, but uploaded half of them on Flickr, which took me aaaaages, I swear. Because once more, we did manage to identify most of the plants, flowers, insects that we met along the way. I am NOT going to show 50 photos here today, I do NOT have the time, but here are my most favorite ones. Please do feel free to look at the whole set as a diaporama below. (there is a video at the end of the diaporama !)WHY O WHY didn't I figure how to post a diaporama earlier ???! it would have saved me hours & hours !!
we won't be home all weekend, it'll be hubby's 35th birthday on Sunday & we're going on a weekend stay not very far, but we'll have a great time.
so please let me wish you a wonderful one, a relaxing one, a creative one, an exciting one, a thrilling one, a peaceful one, a memorable one ... whatever you want, as long as you're happy !

Happy Birthday to the hubs!
ReplyDeleteThis was a beautiful trip! great :)
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday to your hubby!! Have a wonderful weekend!!
ReplyDeleteOkay, Sonia now you'll have to teach me how to make a diaporama. It would be a very handy way to update far away grandparents with photos of our children (a task I'm not very good at.)
ReplyDeleteI would love to have been a stowaway on your castle trip - fun!
Hope you all enjoy your weekend, especially the birthday boy :)
Happy birthday to your wonderful husband !!!
ReplyDeleteI am sure you will have a wonderful weekend away.
I love all the little day trips that you share with us. It really makes me want to return to the south of France and explore with you.
I think I will apply for an international drivers license to prepare for this day.
