new frames

today I went to pick my new glasses. OMG what a relief, I can see clearly again !!! I should have changed them long ago ... but I guess the move & daily rhythm tricked me. Also, I find interesting to tell you something. I'm myopic & without glasses, everything is blurry in the world, except all that's close to me. My new ophtalmologist (new because we moved here not a year ago) told me that often, myopic people are prescribed a correction superior to what their eyes really need. (don't ask me why !!), so my old glasses were too strong for my eyes, and adding to that the glass itself had become all scratched, I was always obliged to take them down to sew, embroider, and sometimes even at the computer. Tsk tsk, not smart. So these new glasses are less powerful, but my goodness, they're totally perfect & I can see everything crystal clear now ...
... even all the dirt & dust on the windowpanes ...

eeeeeeeeeeeek !!!!!!
[please insert a falling-on-the-ground sound, thanks]

you may smile / laugh at this, but I'm not !! How long has it been since I've seen all that dirt on the windows ??! Oh well ...
you may now wonder what the new frames look like. Well, they're not drastically different from the other ones. My difficulty was to find thin ones, because it's apparently not the trend, and the thin ones were only a handful in a sea of thick ones !

new glasses

and now you may wonder what they look like on me ! Well, here I am (don't expect me to show up for a long time, you've seen my face enough time for a whole year !!!)

new glasses

yes, always looking above my glasses for such photos ... I find myself more bearable on these, unlike the ones on which I look through the glasses, which make me look like I'm in the Army. (without any offense, Army girls !)

on the zine front now ...
for Valérie, and for the ones of you who don't know exactly what a zine is, well, I'll quote this fab book "Whatcha mean, what's a zine ? The art of making zines & mini-comics", by Mark Todd & Esther Pearl Watson. (book that I discovered once when browsing through Pikaland, after seeing a twit from Apol/LaPomme ... now this is bouncing !! woohoo)
A zine is a hand-made magazine or mini-comic about anything you can imagine : favorite bands, movies, subcultures, obsessions, collections, and personal confessions. They contain diary entries, rants, reviews, interviews, poems, photos, essays, and stories. Zines have been around for as long as people have been expressing themselves on paper.

I think their explanation / description is pretty crystal clear. After I purchased Cathy's (Cathy Cullis) Dreamers zine, I really felt the need to create one of my own, even though I'm no artist, no painter, no poet, no illustrator, no photographer, no papercutter (I think I just made up the word) ... It is fun to express oneself in many different ways, and I'm sure this way will be a great one !

I finished cutting the cover today, and made a few tests to see how it went to white paper. Of course it helped me seeing where I had to correct or improve.

running tests

I've always been a person with very low self-esteem, but I have to say that I'm pretty satisfied with the result for a first papercut ! (can you see my ankles swelling ? nooo ?!) Of course, this is now only the beginning of the adventure, as there is absolutely NO CONTENT at all so far ! ah ! So, I must scoot, and work a bit on it, girls ! Take care, and thanks so much for stopping by !

  1. Sonia, you make me laugh! To say that you are not an illustrator or photographer? That's crazy! You have so much talent in you that it has apparently made you blind to it. Perhaps your new glasses will help you to see that you can do all of these things, and well!

  6. You are so beautiful! (and funny, my friend - I giggles the whole way through this post) :-)

I got contacts a while back and I find myself still wearing my glasses most of the time. I'm just more comfortable in them - but yes, they do get scratched and dirty and then when I put my contacts in I have that moment like you did of "holy, moly when did it get so dirty around here???" LOL

I'm so excited you're doing a zine! You just never know where that will lead .... ;-)
